A Personal Statement on Research, Devotion, History, and Independence

It begins: "I have often described Beezone to people very simply: Beezone is my homework, and I mean that quite literally.

Beezone has developed out of my ongoing study and consideration of Adi Da Samraj—His Teaching, His life, His Work, the history surrounding Him, and my own experience in His Physical and Pre-Company. It was not conceived according to some predetermined editorial plan, nor did I decide at some point that I would become an authority on Adi Da. Its function grew out of something much more personal and fundamental: as a student and teacher, I wanted to get Adi Da correctly.

That may sound like an odd way of putting it, but it remains the best description I know.

Getting Adi Da correctly does not mean simply repeating His words. Nor does it mean accepting and restating every transcendental claim about Him as though I myself possessed the Realization necessary to verify it. Much of what Adi Da communicated about His Transcendental Nature is beyond my own Realization and, I would suggest, beyond the Realization of most, if not all, of His devotees.

I can read what He said. I can study it carefully. I can take it seriously. I can recognize what I recognize. I can consider the testimony of others. I can examine His life and Teaching and compare what was said at one time with what was said at another. But I do not want to pretend to a Realization or understanding that I do not actually possess.

I was personally in Adi Da’s Company, and I hold Him Supreme. I do not pretend to stand outside that history or to approach Him as though He were simply an interesting religious figure whom I discovered in a library. My relationship to this material is personal and has been so for many years. But my personal relationship to Adi Da and what I do through Beezone are not exactly the same thing.

Beezone was never primarily intended to “push” Adi Da, advocate for Adidam, or persuade people toward a predetermined devotional conclusion. My approach has generally been to allow Adi Da to speak for Himself. I present His Teaching largely in His own words, place those words and events within their historical context, preserve the accounts of people who were there, and give the reader considerable freedom to make of the material what he or she will. For the most part, I trust the reader."
